Chimei Materials breaks ground for China polarizer plant

Taiwan-based Chimei Materials recently broke ground for a new plant in Xian, China where it will install its second 2,500mm polarizer production line.

Construction of the plant will be in two phases. The company's second 2,500 mm polarizer production line is part of the phase one project, which also included a 1,500mm polarizer line, with completion scheduled for the third quarter of 2020.

Phase one of Chimei's new Xian plant will be capable of producing a total of 2.7 million square meters monthly, the company disclosed. Details for the plant's phase two project have not been finalized and will depend on demand from its local panel customers.

Covering a land area of 220 acres, Chimei Materials' Xian plant will be able to accommodate a total of four polarizer production lines, the company added.

In addition, Chimei Materials will set up a local subsidiary in Xian with total investment estimated at CNY1 billion (US$158 million), the Taiwan-based company disclosed.

Chimei Materials started operating its first 2,500mm polarizer production line at its Kunshan plant complex in November 2011, when subsidiary Kunshan Chimei Materials Technology struck a deal with Japan's Nitto Denko and China-based Hangzhou Jinjiang Group and Shenzhen Sapo Photoelectric under which Nitto will provide technological support regarding the manufacture of polarizer for large-size TV panels.

Chimei Materials chairman Ho Chao-Yang was quoted in previous reports saying the company plans to set up a total of three 2,500 mm polarizer production lines in China over the next five years.
