The Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) has announced the launch of a new faculty academic scale aimed at improving the role of university educators and rewarding performance.
The announcement came during HCT's annual Spring Conference, which was attended by over 1,300 members of faculty. Under the slogan 2017: Year of Faculty, the conference was inaugurated by Dr. Abdullatif Al Shamsi, HCT Vice Chancellor.
The Vice Chancellor unveiled details of the new faculty system that is based upon international academic criteria. He shared that HCT faculty will be graded, beginning from the lecturer level, all the way up to professor grade.
Furthermore, the initiative supports the recruitment of qualified Emiratis to teaching roles within HCT. In particular, HCT is encouraging Emiratis to participate in its HADEF programme, which further develops the capabilities of Emirati faculty.
Dr. Shamsi also emphasised the need to equip UAE National graduates with the specialised skills needed for the post-oil period.
"This plan necessitates team work and it lies on the shoulders of highly skilled and competent faculty members to empower students to reach their desired academic and professional levels," he said.
In addition to the announcement of the new academic scale, the one-day conference also featured sessions on the latest teaching techniques utilising technology. This included the implementation of a ‘hybrid' education model, which awards graduates with academic and professional certificates.
